Septic installation in Bowmanville, Newcastle and Clarington

Septic installation in Clarington is approved by the Durham Region Health Department, not the Municipality, for the rural lots and hamlets from Hampton and Tyrone to Orono, Kendal and Newtonville. We install new systems for new builds and replace failed beds, designed for ground that runs from glacial-lake beach sand near Bowmanville to till on the moraine's south slope. The permit is filed for you, and you get a written price after the site visit.

New septic installation

Building a house, cottage or shop? You get a complete system sized for the bedrooms and fixtures you are actually putting in, designed to pass the inspection the first time.

  • ✓System design and the Part 8 permit application, handled by us
  • ✓Tank, distribution box and leaching bed installed
  • ✓Conventional bed, raised or filter bed, or tertiary unit, whichever the site needs
  • ✓All excavation, imported fill and backfill included
  • ✓Final grading and site restoration

Septic replacement

Old bed failing? Sewage surfacing, slow drains, a health unit order, or a system that predates the property? You get the old tank out and a new system to current Ontario Building Code, with the inspection coordinated for you.

  • ✓Old tank pumped, removed and disposed of
  • ✓Failed drain field, weeping bed or leaching bed excavated
  • ✓New system to current Part 8 code
  • ✓Health unit or building department inspections coordinated
  • ✓Site restored clean when we leave

We install conventional drain fields (weeping beds, leaching beds, tile beds), raised and filter beds where bedrock or the water table is close, and tertiary treatment units such as Waterloo Biofilter and Ecoflo where the lot or the shoreline calls for one.

We install and replace. We do not do pump-outs or minor repairs. If you only need a tank pumped or a baffle fixed, we will point you to someone who does that. If your system has failed or you are building new, we are the right call.

Septic in Bowmanville, Newcastle and Clarington: what changes here

Who issues the permit

In Clarington the sewage system permit comes from the Durham Region Health Department, which approves private systems everywhere in the Region except Oshawa. Its public counter at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby takes drop-offs, with payment there by cheque only, and the Port Perry office also serves the public; email submissions go to its building applications address. Every application carries a roll number, the signed provincial permit form, Schedule A and the system drawing, and payment goes in separately with its application code. We assemble the package and file it.

The ground you are on

Clarington's own Soper Creek study describes an east-west band of sandy Glacial Lake Iroquois beach deposits through the middle of the watershed. Those sands saturate with spring snowmelt and release water through the rest of the year, so the seasonal water table decides how high a bed sits. North of it, the Halton Till ranges from sandy silt to silty clay depending on what the ice overrode, which changes the bed size from one lot to the next. The test hole tells us which.

The rule that shapes the design

Replacing an older system? The Health Department will search its septic records for a property, for a non-refundable fee, but it holds no records before 1974 and only for properties where someone applied. Searches can take up to 10 business days, and only the owner, the owner's designate in person, or the listing agent can ask. If there is no record, the site visit and test hole tell us what is in the ground before the new design is drawn.

Septic installation in Bowmanville, Newcastle and Clarington: your questions answered

Who approves a septic system in Clarington?

The Durham Region Health Department. Clarington issues the building permit for the house, and the Health Department issues the sewage system permit. We file the septic application for you.

Can I find the permit for my existing system?

Often. The Health Department's septic record search covers properties that applied from 1974 on, takes up to 10 business days and is open to the owner, the owner's designate or the listing agent. Older systems may have no record at all.

Why does the water table matter so much near Bowmanville?

The old Lake Iroquois beach sands there fill with snowmelt every spring and drain slowly over the year. The bed has to sit above that seasonal high, so the test hole timing and reading set the design height.

Do you handle the septic permit?

Yes. We arrange the design and file the Part 8 sewage system permit with whichever office covers your property, a municipal building department or the health unit, and we book every inspection.

How much does a new septic system cost?

A conventional system for a typical home in Central Ontario runs about $15,000 to $30,000. Raised beds, tertiary units and difficult access push it higher. You get a written price after the site visit.

How long does an installation take?

Three to five days on site for most systems. Add the permit lead time in front of that, which we manage and keep you posted on.

How do I know my septic system is failing?

Sewage surfacing or a wet, spongy patch over the bed, slow drains through the whole house, gurgling, sewage smell outside, or an unusually green strip of lawn over the bed. If you see any of these, call. If it needs replacing we will tell you straight, and if it only needs a repair we will send you to someone who does repairs.

Do you install raised beds and tertiary systems?

Yes. Where bedrock, a high water table or a small lot rules out a conventional bed, we install raised and filter beds and tertiary treatment units such as Waterloo Biofilter and Ecoflo.

Can you install in winter?

Often, depending on frost depth and access. Frozen ground costs a bit more. If your system has failed and cannot wait for spring, call and we will tell you whether your site works in winter.
