Shoreline restoration on Lake Simcoe, east shore

Shoreline restoration on Lake Simcoe's east shore, from Beaverton and Gamebridge to Thorah Island and the Brock lakefront, starts with the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan and the conservation authority's permit. The usual job is a bank that has slumped into the lake or an old wall that has tipped forward. One crew with its own machines re-slopes the bank in river rock, roots it with native plants and sets armour stone steps where the path meets the water, with an owner on site and the permits filed for you.

Shoreline restoration

Bank washing into the lake, an old wall leaning out, ice shoving the stone around every spring? You get a shoreline rebuilt to hold, in the form the permit offices approve.

  • ✓Eroded banks re-sloped and armoured with river rock on a 3:1 slope
  • ✓Failed timber, concrete and stone walls taken out
  • ✓Native planting and a no-mow buffer that roots the bank
  • ✓Armour stone steps and seating walls up the bank to the water
  • ✓Machine and stone access planned, the site restored when we leave

The permits, handled

On the Kawartha lakes most shoreline jobs need two approvals, and the calendar matters as much as the paperwork. You sign; we prepare and file.

  • ✓Your survey checked for a City shoreline road allowance
  • ✓Pre-consultation and permit with Kawartha Conservation or Otonabee Conservation
  • ✓Parks Canada in-water and shoreline works application on Trent-Severn lakes
  • ✓The build timed to the fish-spawning window
  • ✓Every approval in hand before a machine touches the bank

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the grading, the stone and the planting are one crew's work, with an owner on site every day.

We design to what the conservation authority and Parks Canada approve. If what you picture is a vertical armour stone wall at the waterline, you hear at the first visit what gets permitted instead, before you spend a dollar on drawings.

Shorelines on Lake Simcoe, east shore: what the permits allow

Who signs off

The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority regulates the shoreline under Ontario Regulation 41/24, in force since April 1, 2024. Inside its regulated area, grading, placing or removing material, and building any structure take its permit before work starts. In December 2021 LSRCA hired Baird & Associates to review and update its Lake Simcoe shoreline hazard limits, so the line on an older survey may not match today's. Parks Canada manages the lake level through the Trent-Severn Waterway and permits work on the waterway's beds, so we confirm with it whether your in-water work also needs its approval. We prepare and file the applications.

What gets approved

The Lake Simcoe Protection Plan allows significant alteration of the shore only to stabilize, protect or restore it, and it directs natural treatments, such as native planting and bioengineering that keep the natural contour of the shoreline, wherever practical. Outside settlement areas the Plan's vegetation protection zone runs 100 metres back from the lake, and 30 metres in built-up shoreline areas. So the design starts with sloped stone and deep-rooted plants that follow the bank, and armour stone goes where it earns its place: steps and seating walls up the slope.

The calendar

Lake Simcoe carries cold-water fish, lake trout and lake whitefish, that spawn in fall, and warm-water bass that spawn in late spring. Fisheries and Oceans Canada's southern Ontario windows run October 1 to May 31 for lake trout and May 1 to July 15 for bass, and where species overlap the windows combine. That leaves mid-July through September for in-water work, so permits filed over the winter are the ones ready in time.

Shoreline restoration on Lake Simcoe, east shore: your questions answered

Can I put up a new wall at the water's edge on Lake Simcoe?

The Lake Simcoe Protection Plan allows significant alteration of the shore only to stabilize, protect or restore it, and it points to natural treatments that keep the shoreline's contour wherever practical. In practice the approval goes to sloped stone and planting. Taking out an old failing wall and re-sloping the bank is part of that work.

How far back from the lake do the rules reach?

The Plan's vegetation protection zone is 100 metres from the shore outside settlement areas and 30 metres in built-up shoreline areas, and the Province encourages owners of existing cottages and homes to re-naturalize up to 30 metres where practical. We design the planting with that in mind.

Does the lake level change the build?

Yes. LSRCA says Lake Simcoe usually moves 0.4 to 0.5 metres a year, highest from April to June and lowest in late fall and winter, with Parks Canada managing it through the Trent-Severn. We set the toe of the stone for the low water and the planting for the high.

Do I need a permit to fix my shoreline?

On the Kawartha lakes, almost always two. Parks Canada permits all work on the bed and waters of the Trent-Severn lakes, including shoreline stabilization, and the conservation authority permits work in its regulated area along the shore. We prepare and file both.

Can I put an armour stone wall at the water's edge?

Kawartha Conservation's published guidance steers away from hardened shorelines, meaning retaining walls, sheet piles and armour stone at the water's edge. What it recommends is river rock in mixed sizes on a 3:1 slope along the natural contour, native plants and a no-mow buffer. We design to that, and put armour stone where it earns its place: steps, seating walls and terraces up the bank.

When can the work happen?

On lakes that hold walleye and bass, which is most of the Kawarthas, Fisheries and Oceans Canada's timing window keeps in-water work off-limits from March 15 to July 15 while fish spawn. Parks Canada permits are valid for one year, so we file in fall or winter and schedule the build for the open window.

How long do the permits take?

Kawartha Conservation publishes its timelines: a streamlined permit is checked for completeness in 10 days and issued within 14 more, a standard minor permit in 14 plus 21 days. Parks Canada asks for applications several months before the start date. That is why fall is the time to start.

Can you take out an old wall?

Yes. Removing a failed timber, concrete or stone wall is shoreline work too, so it goes through the same permits, and the bank is re-sloped and planted where the wall stood.

How is a shoreline priced?

By the length of frontage, the slope, how machines and stone get to the water, and what the permits require. You get a written price after the site visit, with the permit work priced in the same quote.
