Excavation in Port Perry and Scugog

Excavation in Port Perry and across Scugog runs under By-law 27-26, the Township's site alteration by-law passed May 25, 2026, and in the south under the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan too. Around Port Perry that means homes and additions on rural lots, laneways off Township roads where the Township sets the culvert itself, and service trenches through sandy moraine ground. Our own excavators do the digging, an owner runs the job, and the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) locate and fill permit are filed before anything moves.

Site prep, foundations and services

Building a house, cottage, shop or addition? You get the lot cleared, the foundation dug to the engineer's drawings, the site services trenched in, and the grade set so water goes where it belongs.

  • ✓Lot clearing, stump and brush removal
  • ✓Foundation and basement excavation to the drawings
  • ✓Site services: water, hydro, gas and drainage trenches, backfilled and compacted
  • ✓Rough grading, imported granular and fill where the ground needs it
  • ✓Final grading and site restoration

Driveways, drainage and land work

New driveway or entrance, a wet yard, a slope that needs terracing, a burst water line to the well? You get the machine, the operator and the paperwork in one call.

  • ✓New driveways, entrances and culverts, entrance permit filed for you
  • ✓Trenching for water lines, well lines and yard hydrants
  • ✓Drainage: swales, French drains and regrading that stop the pooling
  • ✓Retaining wall and shoreline excavation, permits coordinated
  • ✓Demolition excavation and haul-away for full-structure tear-downs

We run our own excavators and skid steers, and we dig with the utilities located first, every time. Soil that leaves the site goes to a proper reuse or disposal site under Ontario's excess-soil rules.

We do not do hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving or concrete forming. If your job is one of those we will point you to someone who does it. If it needs a machine, an operator who owns it, and the permits handled, we are the right call.

Digging in Port Perry and Scugog: what changes here

Permits and locates

Under By-law 27-26, a minor site alteration under 10 cubic metres needs no permit. Above that, a Minor Site Alteration permit goes through the Township's online registry, up to 200 cubic metres per hectare of usable lot area, with larger jobs moving to a Small or Large permit. A new or moved entrance, a culvert widening or a curb cut takes a Township entrance permit, and in Scugog the Township installs the entrance itself, at the owner's cost, to its standard drawings. Work that occupies the road allowance takes a Road Occupancy Permit filed at least 60 days ahead. We file each one.

The ground you are on

Southern Scugog climbs onto the Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of sand and gravel where the streams feeding Lake Scugog begin. North of it, the Lake Scugog plan counts 86 drumlins: low, elongated hills under 1.5 kilometres long, up to 400 metres wide and 25 metres high, made of highly calcareous till with sand and gravel. Moraine sand digs fast and drains well, though trench walls slump without support. Drumlin till holds a cut, and the flat valleys between hold water. We plan shoring, drainage and spoil for the ground we find.

The rule that shapes the job

Section 3.5 of By-law 27-26 bars site alteration on Oak Ridges Moraine lands unless the work is permitted under the Moraine plan, tied to a Township building permit, or exempt under the by-law. The Moraine plan covers about 190,000 hectares and treats landform conservation areas with particularly strict review. On a moraine lot, we confirm which designation the property sits in before any grade change is priced.

Excavation in Port Perry and Scugog: your questions answered

Do I need a permit to bring fill onto my Scugog property?

Under 10 cubic metres, about one tandem load, no. Above that, you apply through the Township's online Minor Site Alteration registry, and the Township can ask where the fill comes from and for its chemical quality. Large volumes take a full permit. We handle the application.

Who builds the culvert at the end of my new driveway?

In Scugog, the Township. Its road permit rules say entrances are installed by the Township at the applicant's expense, to the specifications on the permit. We apply for the entrance permit through Permit Central and build the driveway behind it.

My lot is on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Can I still regrade?

Often, but only within the Moraine plan. Scugog's by-law allows site alteration on Moraine lands when it is permitted under the plan, tied to a building permit, or exempt. Natural core, linkage and landform conservation areas carry the tightest limits. We check the mapping first.

What excavation work do you do?

Site preparation and foundation digs, lot clearing and grading, trenching and backfill for services and water lines, driveways and entrances, drainage, and the excavation side of demolition and septic jobs.

What do you not do?

Hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving and concrete forming. We will tell you straight and point you to someone who does.

Do you handle the utility locates?

Yes. Ontario law requires a locate request before any digging. We file it with Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) at least five business days ahead, and we do not dig until the marks are down.

How do you price excavation?

One written price after the site visit for a defined job. If the job is open-ended, we agree the rate and the estimate up front and you see the hours.

How soon can you start?

Small jobs often inside two weeks in season. Anything with permits waits on the permit, which we manage and keep you posted on.

What happens to the soil you dig out?

Reused on site where the grade needs it, otherwise hauled to a proper reuse or disposal site. Ontario's excess-soil regulation applies once soil leaves a property, and we handle that paperwork.
