Why it matters

Where your summer happens.

Patio stones that heaved over the winter, a fire pit the ice storm wrecked, a slope you cannot use, a backyard that is just grass. Landscaping here means the built parts of a yard, the patio, walkway, walls and steps, and the grading underneath. Kawartha ground freezes and thaws all winter, so what sits under the stone decides how it looks in May.

Stone that stays flat

Loose, sunken or heaved patio stones come from a thin base. Yours goes down on a base dug, graded and compacted by our own machines, built to ride out freeze and thaw.

Water kept off the house

Every patio, walkway and wall is graded so rain and the spring melt drain away from your foundation and off the patio.

A yard you use

Rebuild the fire pit and make it a little nicer, add a patio and a few stone steps, and the lawn you mow becomes the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

The ballpark

Most of the yards we build start around $20,000, from a patio and a wall up to a full backyard.

What we do

What is included.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • Pool surrounds
  • Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • Fire pits and seating areas
  • Pergolas and privacy screens
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Decks and fences

The base decides everythingWe run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Permits, when a wall needs themWalls that need them get a structural design and a building permit before we dig. Anything near the water goes to the conservation authority first. We check at the first visit.

How it works

Four steps, one crew.

  1. First visit

We walk the property with you, talk through what you want, and give you rough numbers so you know where the project sits.

  2. Design and quote

We work through every detail with you and hand you a detailed quote before anything starts.

  3. Drawings and permits

Structural drawings where a wall needs them, permits filed, the schedule set.

  4. Build and walk-through

One or both owners on site every day, then a final walk-through with you before we call it done.

Thor Construction company did some hardscaping for us in our backyard around the pool. Right from the start they were responsive, they worked with us on a design that was functional for the space and stayed within the agreed budget. Their work was fabulous! The attention to detail created that special place in our backyard that we will certainly enjoy for many years to come.

Thor Construction designed and installed a new backyard deck and fence. It was completed ontime and within budget. The crew was very professional from start to finish. I would recommend them for any landscaping needs.

Questions

Landscaping FAQ.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property or a building entrance is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code and needs a structural design and a building permit. Anything near the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Do you work at cottages?

Yes. Waterfront lots, rock close to the surface and tight access are normal around the Kawarthas, and we plan for them at the first visit.

How long have you been in business?

Thor Construction is 3 years in business, with 20+ years of experience behind it. One of the two owners runs every job, every day.
