Landscaping in Port Perry and Scugog

Landscaping in Port Perry, Prince Albert and across Scugog changed this year, when the Township's new site alteration by-law put a 10 cubic metre line on the fill a yard can take without a permit. On Lake Scugog and Scugog Island it is often stone steps toward the water; in Port Perry and Prince Albert, a patio, pool surround or outdoor kitchen. Machines we own dig and compact the base, an owner sees it through, and the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) locate is filed.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Port Perry and Scugog: what changes here

Permits and locates

Scugog's Site Alteration By-law 27-26 lets a yard take under 10 cubic metres of fill with no permit; above that, a Minor Site Alteration permit goes through the Township's online registry, and the Township can ask for the chemical quality and source of imported fill. A pool or hot tub takes a Township permit through Cloudpermit with a site plan showing setbacks to the house, lot lines and fencing. Every pool sits inside a fence at least 1.5 metres high with self-closing, self-latching gates, and it is inspected before it is filled. We draw the surround around those rules.

The ground you are on

Kawartha Conservation describes soils across the Lake Scugog watershed ranging from loose, granular sands and sandy loams to dense, poorly drained clay loams, with generally shallow profiles. A yard in Port Perry can sit on either, sometimes both. Sandy loam drains and compacts well under a patio base; clay loam holds water and heaves in a freeze, so it gets a deeper granular base, a filter fabric and grading that moves water off the stone and away from the house.

The rule that shapes the build

Lakefront and creekside yards sit inside Kawartha Conservation's regulated area. Its permit list includes fill, grade changes and excavation, and building a deck or gazebo; tree removal counts only when roots are dug out or the area is wetland, and fences usually do not need one. We check the regulated-area mapping at the first visit, so the design is cleared before you choose the stone.

Landscaping in Port Perry and Scugog: your questions answered

Can I regrade my backyard in Port Perry without a permit?

If the fill stays under 10 cubic metres, about one tandem load, yes. Above that, Scugog's by-law asks for a Minor Site Alteration permit through its online registry. Most full patio and wall builds bring in more than that, so we file it.

What does the Township check on a pool surround?

A Township pool permit through Cloudpermit, a site plan with the setbacks to the house, lot lines and fence, a fence at least 1.5 metres high with self-closing and self-latching gates, and an inspection before the pool is filled. We build the patio and walls to fit.

Do I need a conservation permit for a deck by the lake?

Inside Kawartha Conservation's regulated area, yes. Its permit list names decks and gazebos, grading and fill. A fence usually does not need one unless it affects a watercourse or wetland. We check the map and file the application.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
