Septic installation in Norwood and Havelock

Septic installation around Norwood and Havelock serves the land outside two serviced villages: both run municipal water and sewer, while Westwood, the farms and the cottages on Kasshabog, Round and Belmont Lake rely on private systems. Asphodel-Norwood and Havelock-Belmont-Methuen each took the sewage permit over from Peterborough Public Health in late 2024, and each runs it its own way.

New septic installation

Building a house, cottage or shop? You get a complete system sized for the bedrooms and fixtures you are actually putting in, designed to pass the inspection the first time.

  • ✓System design and the Part 8 permit application, handled by us
  • ✓Tank, distribution box and leaching bed installed
  • ✓Conventional bed, raised or filter bed, or tertiary unit, whichever the site needs
  • ✓All excavation, imported fill and backfill included
  • ✓Final grading and site restoration

Septic replacement

Old bed failing? Sewage surfacing, slow drains, a health unit order, or a system that predates the property? You get the old tank out and a new system to current Ontario Building Code, with the inspection coordinated for you.

  • ✓Old tank pumped, removed and disposed of
  • ✓Failed drain field, weeping bed or leaching bed excavated
  • ✓New system to current Part 8 code
  • ✓Health unit or building department inspections coordinated
  • ✓Site restored clean when we leave

We install conventional drain fields (weeping beds, leaching beds, tile beds), raised and filter beds where bedrock or the water table is close, and tertiary treatment units such as Waterloo Biofilter and Ecoflo where the lot or the shoreline calls for one.

We install and replace. We do not do pump-outs or minor repairs. If you only need a tank pumped or a baffle fixed, we will point you to someone who does that. If your system has failed or you are building new, we are the right call.

Septic in Norwood and Havelock: what changes here

Who issues the permit

In Asphodel-Norwood, septic applications go in at the municipal office or by email, and the design rests on two test holes at the proposed bed, at least 1.5 metres deep or down to the water table or bedrock. In Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, the Township has held authority over septic permits since Peterborough Public Health stopped in November 2024. Applications go through Cloudpermit, with test holes to the same depth, and may need conservation authority, source water, MNR, MTO or MECP approvals. We file with whichever township covers your lot.

The ground you are on

The county soil survey maps Long soils in Asphodel: stony till over limestone that sits 30 to 75 centimetres down on a bedrock-controlled plain. In Methuen, the Methuen soils weather from granite gneiss, with hard rock about 40 centimetres down, and Belmont has soils formed on gabbro found nowhere else in the county. Shallow rock on both sides often means a raised bed, sized after the test holes.

The rule that shapes the design

Treatment units come with homework in Asphodel-Norwood. Where a septic system includes a treatment unit, the Township requires regular mandatory inspections that the owner arranges under a maintenance agreement, and systems in Otonabee Conservation's mapped vulnerable areas get Clean Water Act inspections every five years. We tell you at the design stage whether a treatment unit is the right call.

Septic installation in Norwood and Havelock: your questions answered

Which township issues my septic permit?

Asphodel-Norwood for Norwood, Westwood and the Asphodel ward; Havelock-Belmont-Methuen for Havelock, Belmont and Methuen, including Kasshabog, Round and Belmont Lake. Both took the program over from Peterborough Public Health in November 2024.

My lot is in Norwood village. Do I need a septic?

Usually not. The County plan lists Norwood among the four County settlements with municipal water and wastewater. Outside the village, in Westwood and the rural ward, private systems are the rule.

My old bed on Belmont Lake is inside 30 metres. What happens when it fails?

HBM's zoning by-law, 2025-046, lets a replacement leaching bed or holding tank sit as far from the high water mark as can be achieved, aiming for 30 metres, without a minor variance. We find the best spot at the site visit.

Do you handle the septic permit?

Yes. We arrange the design and file the Part 8 sewage system permit with whichever office covers your property, a municipal building department or the health unit, and we book every inspection.

How much does a new septic system cost?

A conventional system for a typical home in Central Ontario runs about $15,000 to $30,000. Raised beds, tertiary units and difficult access push it higher. You get a written price after the site visit.

How long does an installation take?

Three to five days on site for most systems. Add the permit lead time in front of that, which we manage and keep you posted on.

How do I know my septic system is failing?

Sewage surfacing or a wet, spongy patch over the bed, slow drains through the whole house, gurgling, sewage smell outside, or an unusually green strip of lawn over the bed. If you see any of these, call. If it needs replacing we will tell you straight, and if it only needs a repair we will send you to someone who does repairs.

Do you install raised beds and tertiary systems?

Yes. Where bedrock, a high water table or a small lot rules out a conventional bed, we install raised and filter beds and tertiary treatment units such as Waterloo Biofilter and Ecoflo.

Can you install in winter?

Often, depending on frost depth and access. Frozen ground costs a bit more. If your system has failed and cannot wait for spring, call and we will tell you whether your site works in winter.
