Landscaping in Uxbridge

Landscaping in Uxbridge with a pool in the plan starts with the Township's pool enclosure permit, which has to be issued before anyone installs or even excavates for the pool. In town the job is usually a patio, walkway or pool surround; on the country lots around Goodwood, Zephyr and Leaskdale, stone terraces and outdoor rooms that step down a slope. We dig and compact the base with our own machines, keep an owner on site and file the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) locate.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Uxbridge: what changes here

Permits and locates

Under Uxbridge's Fence By-law, a pool enclosure permit comes before installing or excavating for a pool, through Cloudpermit, and the enclosure work and final inspection are due within six months or the permit expires. A pergola, trellis or gazebo over 15 square metres takes a building permit, and grade changes fall under the Township's site alteration by-law and its sworn-affidavit application. We line up every one of those permits before the dig starts.

The ground you are on

North of the moraine, LSRCA's Black River plan describes Zephyr Creek running in a swampy valley about 1.6 kilometres wide, and drumlins built of stone-rich silty sand till that gets siltier toward the moraine. Silty till holds water and heaves, and valley-edge yards stay wet into spring. We set a deeper compacted base, drain behind every wall, and grade surfaces to move water off the stone.

The rule that shapes the build

Uxbridge treats a full replacement of a deck or shed as new work: it takes a building permit even on the same footprint, and the new structure has to meet current zoning. Attached decks of any size, and decks with a roof or over 24 inches off the ground, need one too. When a patio project replaces an old deck, we plan for the permit and today's setbacks from the start.

Landscaping in Uxbridge: your questions answered

When do I need the pool permit in Uxbridge?

Before the pool goes in or the excavation starts. The Township's pool enclosure permit is issued through Cloudpermit, and the enclosure and final inspection are due within six months. We schedule the dig and the surround around it.

I'm replacing my old deck with a stone patio. Do I need a permit?

A patio at grade usually not, but if you rebuild a deck, Uxbridge counts a complete replacement as needing a building permit, even on the same footprint, and it has to meet current zoning. We plan the layout with that in mind.

Do you build on the rolling lots around Zephyr?

Yes. Slopes and wet valley edges are typical there, so walls get proper drainage and the base goes deeper. We are based in Bobcaygeon and travel for the work, with an owner on the job.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.
