Landscaping in Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland

Landscaping in Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland usually starts with two checks: where the septic bed sits, and how much fill the job brings in. In the villages the request is often a patio, a walkway and a fire pit on a town lot; nearer the lake at Beaverton, a pool surround or stone steps on softer lake-bottom soil. Our crew digs and compacts the base with our own machines, an owner is on the job, and the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) locate is booked for you.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland: what changes here

Permits and locates

Brock's site alteration by-law lets landscaping, lawn dressing and new garden beds go ahead without a fill permit, as long as the work stays inside the lot's one-time minor allowance and the grade has not been raised in the previous 12 months. Past that, a Township permit comes first. An in-ground pool takes a pool enclosure permit, and when the pool sits within 16 feet 6 inches of the septic system the Township asks for Durham Region Health clearance before it signs off. We check both at the first visit.

The ground you are on

Near Beaverton the yard sits on the old floor of glacial Lake Algonquin: layered sand, silt and clay, with the old lake's shoreline cliffs, beaches and terraces still in the ground. Inland, steep-sided drumlins push runoff down into the low spots between the hills. Silt and clay hold water and heave in a freeze, so a patio here gets a deeper compacted granular base and grading that sends water away from the house and off the stone.

The rule that shapes the build

Clearing room for a yard on a treed rural lot? Durham Region's Woodland By-law, passed July 29, 2020, covers woodlands of one hectare or more, and cutting in one takes a Regional permit unless an exemption applies, such as an issued building permit or the removal of dead and hazardous trees. Treed areas under one hectare fall to the Township. We walk the trees with you before anything is drawn.

Landscaping in Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland: your questions answered

Can you build a pool surround close to my septic system?

Yes, with the clearance in hand. In Brock, a pool within 16 feet 6 inches of the septic system needs Durham Region Health clearance before the Township issues the pool permit. We locate the tank and bed first and design the surround, the patio and the drainage around them.

Do I need a permit to regrade my yard in Brock?

Small jobs, often not. Landscaping and lawn dressing are exempt while the fill stays inside the lot's one-time minor allowance, which is the usable area in hectares times 200 cubic metres. A typical 70 by 100 foot lot gets about 14 cubic metres. Bigger regrades take a Township permit, and we file it.

How far do you travel to Brock?

We are based in Bobcaygeon, about an hour's drive from Beaverton and Cannington, and we travel for the work. One crew builds every yard, with our own machines on the base and an owner on the job.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
