Landscaping in Fenelon Falls

We build landscaping in Fenelon Falls for year-round homes in town and waterfront cottages on Cameron, Balsam and Sturgeon lakes, from Sturgeon Point up to Rosedale and Coboconk. Patios, walkways, armour stone walls, stone steps, fire pits and pool surrounds, built by one crew with the owners on site every day. Fenelon Falls sits at Lock 34, where boats rise about 7.2 metres from Sturgeon Lake to Cameron Lake. Most builds start around $20,000.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Fenelon Falls: what changes here

Permits and locates

The building permit comes from the City's Lindsay office, and a retaining wall over 1,000 mm of exposed height beside public property or building access is a designated structure under the Building Code. The water is what changes here. Cameron, Balsam and Sturgeon are Trent-Severn lakes, joined by Lock 34 at Fenelon Falls and Lock 35 at Rosedale, so stone on the lake bed or any shoreline stabilization takes a Parks Canada permit, valid for one year. Around Fenelon Falls and Cameron Lake, Kawartha Conservation's regulated area adds its own permit. Every dig starts with a free Ontario Dig Authority locate.

The ground you are on

Kawartha Conservation describes the ground around Balsam and Cameron lakes as mostly limestone, and the soil thins as you head north. Around Cameron Lake to just north of Fenelon Falls it is Otonabee loam. From the northwest side of Balsam up to Norland it is Dummer loam, thin and very stony, and the north shore of Balsam is Carden Plain alvar with little or no soil over the rock. Frost sits between the 1.6 and 1.8 metre lines on the provincial map. On loam we dig out and build a compacted base; on thin soil we set stone close to the limestone and plan drainage across it.

The rule that shapes the build

Septic beds share these lots with the patio. The Building Code keeps a leaching bed's distribution pipes 5 metres from any structure, 15 metres from a lake and 3 metres from a property line, and the septic tank 1.5 metres from a structure. On a raised bed, those distances grow by twice the height the bed sits above original grade. Kawartha Conservation found that septic systems within 75 metres of Balsam and Cameron supply 42.5% of the phosphorus entering from local sources. We locate the tank and bed before we draw anything.

Landscaping in Fenelon Falls: your questions answered

Can I put a patio or interlock over my septic bed in Fenelon Falls?

Not on the bed itself. The Building Code bars covering a leaching bed with any material that has a hydraulic conductivity below 0.01 metres per day, keeps the surface able to shed water and let moisture evaporate, and protects the bed from compaction. We set the patio beside the bed and keep machines off it.

Is my lot near Norland or Kinmount regulated by a conservation authority?

On the City of Kawartha Lakes conservation authority map, no. Fenelon Falls and Cameron Lake sit inside Kawartha Conservation's area, while Norland and Kinmount sit outside every authority's boundary. The City marks the map as approximate, so we confirm your lot against the authority's own mapping before we design.

How long does a conservation permit take for a patio at Sturgeon Point?

Kawartha Conservation handles unenclosed decks and patios through its streamlined permit: it confirms the application is complete within 10 days and issues within 14 more. A minor standard permit runs 14 days, then 21. Free pre-consultation runs every Tuesday in Lindsay. We book that meeting before the design is final.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
