Landscaping in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge

Landscaping in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge is mostly cottage work on granite, where the lot drops from the house to the water. Owners here ask for stone steps down the rock to the dock, a level terrace or fire pit area carved out of a slope, and walls that hold a small lawn. Both towns regulate trees near the water, so the design starts with what stays. Thor sets the stone on bases dug by its own machines, with an owner on every job.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge: what changes here

Permits and locates

Gravenhurst's Tree Preservation By-law 2014-026 asks for a tree cutting permit before work starts. Its shoreline structures permit can depend on other approvals: the Ministry of Natural Resources issues work permits to dredge or fill shore lands or to place structures touching more than 15 square metres of shore land, Fisheries and Oceans Canada comments where needed, and Trent-Severn properties need Parks Canada approval. Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) marks the lines before we dig. We file the applications.

The ground you are on

A watershed review for the District found that every lower-tier official plan in Muskoka requires a vegetative shoreline setback at least 15 metres deep. On Shield lots that strip is often bare rock and roots, and it holds the bank together. Stone work sits behind it, on granular built up over the granite and compacted, so the steps and terraces stay level after frost.

The rule that shapes the build

Gravenhurst's residential site plan agreement keeps at least 75 per cent of a 20 metre strip along the Optimal Summer Water Level as shoreline buffer, and preserves the natural topography, the elevations, any watercourses and the existing stands of trees, apart from the approved building location. That leaves room for a path and steps to the water, not a cleared lawn. We design to it from the first sketch.

Landscaping in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge: your questions answered

Can I take down big trees for a view in Bracebridge?

Within the regulated areas, permits are generally issued only for regulated trees under 38 centimetres in diameter. Larger trees are at the Director's discretion, and never in wetlands, on slopes over 20 per cent, or in a required shoreline buffer.

Does my shoreline plan go to the Ministry of Natural Resources?

If the work dredges or fills shore lands, or places structures touching more than 15 square metres of shore land, yes, a work permit comes first. Gravenhurst names the Ministry as the first point of contact.

How much of my shoreline can be landscaped in Gravenhurst?

Under the residential site plan agreement, at least 75 per cent of the 20 metre strip along the water stays as shoreline buffer. The rest is where the path, steps and a small seating area go.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
