Landscaping in Bobcaygeon

We build landscaping in Bobcaygeon for year-round homes in the village and waterfront cottages on Pigeon and Sturgeon lakes. Patios, walkways, natural stone and interlock, armour stone and block walls, stone steps, fire pits, grading and sod, built by one crew with the owners on site every day and our own excavators and skid steers. Bobcaygeon's lock, the first completed on the Trent-Severn Waterway, lifts boats about 1.6 metres from Pigeon Lake to Sturgeon Lake. Most builds start around $20,000.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Bobcaygeon: what changes here

Permits and locates

Building permits here come from the City of Kawartha Lakes Building and Septic Division at 180 Kent Street West in Lindsay. The Building Code designates a retaining wall over 1,000 mm of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to. That wall falls under the code's Part 4 structural design rules and takes a building permit. On the water side, Kawartha Conservation regulates the inland lake flood hazard plus a further 15 metres, and 30 metres around wetlands, under Ontario Regulation 41/24. Before we dig we request a free Ontario Dig Authority locate, at least 5 business days ahead.

The ground you are on

The limestone under Bobcaygeon is the Bobcaygeon Formation, and one of its type localities is the Little Bob quarry just south of town. Kawartha Conservation describes the Pigeon Lake watershed as a transition: exposed granite or limestone with shallow soils to the north, deeper soils over limestone to the south. The provincial frost map puts this area between the 1.6 and 1.8 metre frost lines. So we take the patio base down to rock or firm ground, compact crushed stone in layers, and give water a way out, which keeps the stone from lifting each spring.

The rule that shapes the build

On a waterfront lot, the strip between your lot line and the lake can be a City-owned shoreline road allowance. The City of Kawartha Lakes sells shoreline allowances on lakes at a set $9.00 per square foot, $3.50 on rivers, with a $145 non-refundable application fee. Buyers pay the survey, legal fees and any appraisal, and the process typically takes 12 to 18 months. We read your survey at the first visit, so patios, steps and walls sit on land you own or are buying.

Landscaping in Bobcaygeon: your questions answered

Do I need a permit for a patio by the water in Bobcaygeon?

Not always. Ontario Regulation 41/24 exempts an unenclosed, detached patio of 15 square metres or less that sits outside any wetland or watercourse and is not cantilevered. A larger patio inside Kawartha Conservation's regulated area goes through its streamlined permit. We check the regulated-area map at the first visit and prepare the application.

Can you build armour stone at the water's edge on Pigeon Lake?

With a Parks Canada permit, yes. Pigeon Lake is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway, and Parks Canada permits all work on, under and over the bed and waters of its lakes, shoreline stabilization included. Permits last one year, and Parks Canada advises applying several months ahead. We prepare the drawings for that application before we order stone.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Bobcaygeon?

Yes, when the wall holds back more than 1,000 mm of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to. The Building Code calls that a designated structure, so it is designed to Part 4 and permitted through the City's Lindsay office. We arrange the engineering and the permit.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
