Landscaping in Campbellford and Trent Hills

Landscaping in Trent Hills is often riverfront work, because the Trent-Severn Waterway runs through Hastings and Campbellford on its way to the Bay of Quinte. Riverside owners mostly ask for a patio and steps down to the water and a wall that holds a sloped bank, while yards in Warkworth and the countryside lean toward terraces and walkways. Each base is dug and packed by Thor's machines, and an owner is on every job.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Campbellford and Trent Hills: what changes here

Permits and locates

Lower Trent Conservation's written permission covers placing a structure of any kind, site grading, moving material, and any change to a watercourse, shoreline or wetland in its regulated areas. On the Crowe River side, the Crowe Valley Conservation Authority permits retaining walls, erosion control and shoreline changes in its regulated areas. Anything on the bed of the Trent River needs a Parks Canada permit, since the river is part of the Trent-Severn Waterway. Locate requests go to Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call). We file them all.

The ground you are on

About 14 kilometres of the Trent River run along northern Percy and through Hastings, and another 45 kilometres through Campbellford and Seymour, with islands and wetlands along the way. The Crowe River, Trout Creek, Percy Creek and Burnley Creek all drain into it through broad wooded stream corridors. Riverside yards sit low and wet, so a patio there gets a deeper, free-draining base.

The rule that shapes the build

Trent Hills' Official Plan asks for a 30 metre setback from all watercourses for development in the rural area, to protect water quality and fish habitat and keep building out of flood and erosion areas. In flood-prone spots the setback runs past 30 metres to the regulatory flood line, and it can be reduced only with an environmental impact study. In Campbellford, Hastings and Warkworth, the setback is set with the conservation authority.

Landscaping in Campbellford and Trent Hills: your questions answered

Do I need a permit to landscape along the Trent River?

Usually. Lower Trent Conservation regulates grading and structures near watercourses and shorelines, and Parks Canada permits any work on the river bed. Both get checked on the first visit.

How far back from a creek can I build a patio?

In the rural area, the Official Plan looks for 30 metres from the watercourse, more where the regulatory flood reaches further. Inside Campbellford, Hastings and Warkworth, the setback is worked out with the conservation authority. We measure it on site.

Which conservation authority covers my yard?

Most of Trent Hills is Lower Trent Conservation, and the Crowe Valley Conservation Authority covers the part that drains to the Crowe River. Both have online map viewers, and we look your lot up before the first visit.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
