Excavation in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool

An excavation contractor in Omemee digs some of the loosest and some of the hardest ground in Kawartha Lakes within a few kilometres: esker sand and gravel, drumlin till and limestone underneath. The Hogsback ridge west of the village is dotted with aggregate pits, Highway 7 runs straight through, and Kawartha Conservation's regulated area follows the Pigeon River valley. Each of those changes the permits and the way a trench is dug.

Site prep, foundations and services

Building a house, cottage, shop or addition? You get the lot cleared, the foundation dug to the engineer's drawings, the site services trenched in, and the grade set so water goes where it belongs.

  • ✓Lot clearing, stump and brush removal
  • ✓Foundation and basement excavation to the drawings
  • ✓Site services: water, hydro, gas and drainage trenches, backfilled and compacted
  • ✓Rough grading, imported granular and fill where the ground needs it
  • ✓Final grading and site restoration

Driveways, drainage and land work

New driveway or entrance, a wet yard, a slope that needs terracing, a burst water line to the well? You get the machine, the operator and the paperwork in one call.

  • ✓New driveways, entrances and culverts, entrance permit filed for you
  • ✓Trenching for water lines, well lines and yard hydrants
  • ✓Drainage: swales, French drains and regrading that stop the pooling
  • ✓Retaining wall and shoreline excavation, permits coordinated
  • ✓Demolition excavation and haul-away for full-structure tear-downs

We run our own excavators and skid steers, and we dig with the utilities located first, every time. Soil that leaves the site goes to a proper reuse or disposal site under Ontario's excess-soil rules.

We do not do hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving or concrete forming. If your job is one of those we will point you to someone who does it. If it needs a machine, an operator who owns it, and the permits handled, we are the right call.

Digging in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool: what changes here

Permits and locates

Before any machine digs, the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) gets a locate request at least five business days ahead. Highway 7 through Omemee is a provincial highway, so access and building close to it go through the Ministry of Transportation's corridor permits. On City roads the Entrance Permit comes from Public Works, and under the City's entrance by-law a culvert longer than 14 metres means the owner pays for any catch basins or inlet and outlet structures the drainage needs. We file the right one and build to it.

The ground you are on

The Omemee esker runs about 115 kilometres from the south end of Pigeon Lake through Emily into Manvers, and west of Omemee it stands as a 20 to 30 metre ridge locally called the Hogsback. Manvers and Emily hold much of the City's sand and gravel extraction, a lot of it from that esker. Trench walls in clean sand and gravel stand poorly, so we plan the slope or the shoring before the dig, and we price the job on what the test holes show.

The rule that shapes the job

Inside Kawartha Conservation's regulated area along the Pigeon River and its creeks, the permit application asks for the volume and origin of any fill brought in from off site, for septic beds, driveways and foundations alike. If the fill tops 500 cubic metres, it goes through a separate application and process. We work out the volumes during the quote, so the fill side of the permit is settled before the trucks are booked.

Excavation in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool: your questions answered

I want a long culvert across my frontage. Who maintains it?

Under the City's entrance by-law, the City maintains and replaces culverts installed under the by-law, and the owner maintains the driving surface. Past 14 metres of culvert, the owner covers any catch basins the drainage needs. We size it at the site visit.

Who handles an entrance on Highway 7?

The Ministry of Transportation, through its highway corridor permits, since Highway 7 is a provincial highway. An entrance on a City road is a Public Works permit instead. We confirm which applies before we quote.

Someone offered me surplus soil from a City road job. Is that fine?

Ask for the paperwork first. When the City generates excess soil on its own projects, it provides a letter documenting the disposal location and the site-specific requirements, and the City says owners receive that letter before accepting any material.

What excavation work do you do?

Site preparation and foundation digs, lot clearing and grading, trenching and backfill for services and water lines, driveways and entrances, drainage, and the excavation side of demolition and septic jobs.

What do you not do?

Hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving and concrete forming. We will tell you straight and point you to someone who does.

Do you handle the utility locates?

Yes. Ontario law requires a locate request before any digging. We file it with Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) at least five business days ahead, and we do not dig until the marks are down.

How do you price excavation?

One written price after the site visit for a defined job. If the job is open-ended, we agree the rate and the estimate up front and you see the hours.

How soon can you start?

Small jobs often inside two weeks in season. Anything with permits waits on the permit, which we manage and keep you posted on.

What happens to the soil you dig out?

Reused on site where the grade needs it, otherwise hauled to a proper reuse or disposal site. Ontario's excess-soil regulation applies once soil leaves a property, and we handle that paperwork.
