Landscaping in Stouffville

Landscaping in Stouffville can trigger a site alteration permit faster than people think: the Town lists building a berm or retaining wall, and creating or filling a pond, among the work that needs one. Backyards in town tend toward a patio, walkway and fire pit; larger lots around Ballantrae, Musselman's Lake and Preston Lake ask for terraced walls and outdoor living on rolling moraine ground. Our own machines build the base, an owner sees each job through, and the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) locate goes in first.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Stouffville: what changes here

Permits and locates

Stouffville's Site Alteration By-law 2024-037-RE requires a permit to build a berm or retaining wall, to create or fill in a man-made pond, or for any work that changes the existing grade, past the property's one-time fill allowance. Retaining walls are on the Town's list of designated structures, and under the Building Code a wall over 1 metre beside public property, a building access or private property the public uses takes a building permit with dimensioned plans, elevations and structural load calculations. We prepare both.

The ground you are on

Rural Stouffville mixes two very different soils. LSRCA describes moraine sand and gravel capped along the divide by Halton Till, a silt to clay-silt till, with the sand to sandy-silt Newmarket Till against the moraine's northern edge. Sand drains and compacts easily under a patio; the silty tills hold water and heave. We test what is under the patio area and set the base depth, compaction and drainage to match.

The rule that shapes the build

TRCA counts building a pool, or a new or replacement deck, as development under the Conservation Authorities Act, so inside its regulated area along the Rouge and Duffins Creek either one starts with a TRCA permit. Near the moraine's kettle lakes, the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan prohibits disposing of stormwater into a kettle lake. We design yard drainage to stay on the lot.

Landscaping in Stouffville: your questions answered

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Stouffville?

Often. The Town's site alteration by-law lists retaining walls and berms as work that takes a permit, and a wall over 1 metre beside public property, a building access or private property the public uses is a designated structure needing a building permit. We step the design or file both.

Can I build a pool on a lot near the Rouge or Duffins Creek?

Yes, with TRCA's permit when the lot sits in its regulated area, since TRCA treats pools as development activity. We check the regulated area map at the first visit.

I'm on Musselman's Lake. Where can the yard water go?

Not into the lake by pipe. LSRCA's summary of the Moraine plan notes that disposal of stormwater into a kettle lake is prohibited. We grade to soak runoff into the yard and use swales or infiltration where the soil takes it.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
