Landscaping in Norwood and Havelock

Landscaping around Norwood and Havelock ranges from sandy, quick-draining yards in the Asphodel ward to rock-and-pine cottage lots on Belmont, Round and Kasshabog Lake. Two conservation authorities split the area, Otonabee Conservation on the Asphodel side and Crowe Valley Conservation in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. On the lakes, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen's zoning keeps buildings and structures 30 metres back from the water.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Norwood and Havelock: what changes here

Permits and locates

In Asphodel-Norwood, Otonabee Conservation regulates wetlands plus a 30 metre buffer and floodplains plus 15 metres under Ontario Regulation 41/24. In Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, Crowe Valley Conservation applies the same regulation, and the Township's zoning by-law, 2025-046, allows no building or structure within 30 metres of the high water mark, with docks and boathouses under separate on-water structures by-laws. Locates go through the Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call).

The ground you are on

The county soil survey maps Brinco soils, well drained calcareous sandy outwash, with some of their largest areas in Asphodel. Around Havelock, Wendigo outwash sands are among the few that get cultivated, while Belmont and Methuen are the land the Township's history describes as dense white pine, many lakes and bold rock outcrops. Sand drains a patio base well; rock asks for steps and walls fitted to it.

The rule that shapes the build

Shoreline care is the local habit in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen. The Township posts a Protecting and Restoring Healthy Shorelines brochure, nine lake associations work under one umbrella group, and its zoning holds new buildings and structures 30 metres back. So the design keeps decks and sheds back from the water and leaves the native shoreline growing.

Landscaping in Norwood and Havelock: your questions answered

Which conservation authority covers my lot?

Otonabee Conservation on the Asphodel-Norwood side, where the Ouse River sub-watershed drains to the Trent, and Crowe Valley Conservation in Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, which covers the Crowe River, North River and Beaver Creek sub-watersheds. We confirm at the first visit.

Do you work on the Havelock lakes?

Yes. Havelock-Belmont-Methuen keeps public launches on Belmont, Round, Kasshabog, Jack, Crowe and West Twin Lakes and the North River, and we plan access for each lot at the site visit.

Is the Trent River frontage in Asphodel-Norwood on the Trent-Severn?

Yes. Between Rice Lake and Hastings the Trent River is the Trent-Severn's channel, so work at the water there takes a Parks Canada permit. Asphodel-Norwood's launches at Asphodel Heights, Birdsall Wharf and Old Orchard Road sit on that stretch.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
