Landscaping in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool

Landscaping in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool often means building on a slope, and in Manvers it can mean building on the Oak Ridges Moraine. Drumlins and the Hogsback esker give many yards a grade that calls for a terrace before a patio fits, and on Moraine land the plan limits how much of a lot can be hard surface. We design the terraces, walls and drainage around both before the first stone is ordered.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool: what changes here

Permits and locates

Bethany and Pontypool are the two rural settlements the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan names in Kawartha Lakes, and the City's Moraine policy area maps the land around them. There the plan sets a minimum vegetation protection zone of 30 metres around wetlands, streams, seepage areas, kettle lakes and fish habitat, and development or site alteration inside it is prohibited except where the plan allows. Work within 120 metres of those features calls for an evaluation first. Off the Moraine, the City's Site Alteration By-law 2019-105 governs fill and grade changes.

The ground you are on

This is drumlin country. Streams off the Moraine flow north through the rolling Peterborough Drumlin Field, and the county soil survey notes that the side slopes of the drumlins and eskers are too steep for good farming. West of Omemee the esker rises 20 to 30 metres. On slopes like these, a level patio usually means a terrace and a wall, and the wall's base and drainage carry the job. We dig and compact both with our own machines.

The rule that shapes the build

Landform conservation areas. On Moraine land mapped Category 1, an application for development or site alteration keeps disturbance to 25 percent of the net developable area and impervious surfaces to 15 percent. Category 2 allows 50 and 20 percent, and both ask that steep slopes, kettles and ridges stay in their natural form. Patios count against that impervious share, so we plan the hard surfaces around the limit.

Landscaping in Omemee, Bethany and Pontypool: your questions answered

Is my property on the Oak Ridges Moraine?

Possibly, if you are in Manvers. The City's Oak Ridges Moraine policy area maps the land use, natural features, aquifer vulnerability and landform conservation areas, with Bethany and Pontypool as the two rural settlements. We check your lot against the maps at the first visit.

I am in Omemee, not on the Moraine. What applies?

The City's Site Alteration By-law 2019-105 covers fill and grade changes, and inside Kawartha Conservation's regulated area along the Pigeon River its permit comes first. We confirm both before the design is final.

Do I need a locate for a patio?

Yes. The Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) asks for a locate before landscaping or planting. Its public locate does not cover private lines, such as a gas line to a barbecue or power to a shed, so those need a private locate. We arrange both.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
