Landscaping in Lindsay

We build landscaping in Lindsay for year-round homes on town lots and country properties out to Omemee, Little Britain, Oakwood and Woodville, plus waterfront cottages on Sturgeon Lake. Patios, walkways, retaining walls, stone steps, fire pits, grading and sod, built by one crew with the owners on site every day and our own machines. Kawartha Conservation describes the ground near Lindsay as drumlin and clay flat. Most builds start around $20,000.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Lindsay: what changes here

Permits and locates

Lindsay has the permit office in town: the City of Kawartha Lakes Building and Septic Division at 180 Kent Street West. The City's deck guide calls for a building permit on every deck except one no more than 600 mm above finished grade that carries no roof. A retaining wall over 1,000 mm of exposed height beside public property or access to a building is a designated structure under the Building Code. Along rivers and creeks, Kawartha Conservation regulates the valley to the stable top of bank plus 15 metres under Ontario Regulation 41/24. Ontario Dig Authority locates come first, at least 5 business days ahead.

The ground you are on

Near Lindsay, varved clay laid down in glacial Lake Schomberg, about 5 metres deep on average and up to 8 metres, fills the low ground between drumlins. Streams there run sluggish, and the Victoria County soil survey rates Simcoe clay as limited by poor drainage. Frost reaches about 1.6 metres on the provincial map. On clay we dig out the soft material, lay a deeper compacted granular base, and pitch patios and walkways to carry water away from the house.

The rule that shapes the build

Regrading or bringing in fill falls under the City's Site Alteration By-law 2019-105. Its definition of fill covers soil, stone, concrete, slurry, sod and turf, and imported fill meets site condition standards, carries no putrescible material and passes a slump test. Whether a permit applies depends on the work: the City's self-screening form checks the exemptions, and permit submissions are prepared by a Qualified Person. Inside a conservation authority's regulated area, the City defers to that authority. We run the screening before we price the grading.

Landscaping in Lindsay: your questions answered

Do I need a permit to cut trees for a patio in Lindsay?

Not from the City today. The City of Kawartha Lakes says it does not currently regulate tree removal on private property. Council sent a draft tree by-law back in September 2024 to be narrowed to development applications, and staff have since paused it. We plan the patio around the trees worth keeping.

Which conservation authority covers Woodville and Little Britain?

Two different ones. On the City's conservation authority map, Woodville sits inside the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority's area, while Lindsay, Little Britain, Oakwood and Omemee fall under Kawartha Conservation. The City marks the map as approximate, so we confirm your lot with the right authority before we design.

Is there limestone under Lindsay yards?

Yes, often under the clay. The Lindsay Formation, a crystalline limestone, shows 6 to 7 metres thick at the Lindsay North Road Cut on Highway 35, a provincial earth science site, and a limestone escarpment runs south of Sturgeon Lake past Ken Reid Conservation Area. We check depth to rock at the site visit and price it up front.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.
