Landscaping in Haliburton and Dysart et al

Landscaping in Haliburton and Dysart et al meets two shoreline rules before any stone is ordered: the Municipality's Site Alteration By-law and the County's tree by-law, both reaching 30 metres back from a lake. Typical asks are stone steps down to the dock at Kennisis or Redstone, a fire pit terrace on a Kashagawigamog lot, and walls and walkways around homes in Haliburton village. Our machines cut and pack every base, with an owner on every job.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Haliburton and Dysart et al: what changes here

Permits and locates

Dysart et al's Site Alteration By-law 2023-101 regulates all site alteration on Environmental Protection zoned land and within 30 metres of a lake. The County of Haliburton's Shoreline Tree Preservation By-law 3505 covers trees across the same 30 metres from the high water mark and is administered by the County, not the Municipality. Clearing for a path to the water no wider than 5 metres is exempt, and so are trees under 10 centimetres in diameter at breast height. Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) gets the locate request. We file every application.

The ground you are on

Dysart's lots are Shield rock and thin soil, and many fall steeply to the water. The County by-law defines a steep slope as 25 per cent or more over 45 metres inland along 25 metres of frontage, and on those slopes most of its exemptions apply only if stumps and root systems stay in the ground. So stone steps get built around the roots, and walls go where the grade allows them.

The rule that shapes the build

On land next to fish habitat, the County by-law switches off its exemptions for building-permit work, buffers, driveways, paths and small trees, so even routine clearing near spawning shoreline is regulated. On a municipal shore road allowance between a lot and the water, several exemptions fall away too. We check for both at the first visit, before laying out a patio or path.

Landscaping in Haliburton and Dysart et al: your questions answered

Can I prune trees for a view of the lake?

Yes, within limits. The County by-law allows pruning in line with good arboricultural practice to open a view of the water from the main building, as long as the tree stays healthy. Removing trees is a different question, and we check it before designing.

Who enforces the shoreline tree rules in Dysart?

The County of Haliburton. Dysart et al refers questions to the County's Forestry Conservation Officer at 705-286-1333. The Municipality handles its own Site Alteration By-law.

Is the 30 metres measured from the summer waterline?

Not always. On a lake whose level is set by control structures, the County by-law uses the regulated high water mark. We measure from the right line before placing any stone.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
