Landscaping in Cobourg and Port Hope

Landscaping in Cobourg and Port Hope often means working around old houses, heritage streets and the Lake Ontario shore. In town, people ask for a stone patio behind a century home, a new front walk and steps, or a pool surround; out in the former Hope Township, larger lots want walls and terraces that handle a slope. Thor builds the base with its own machines, and an owner is on every job.

Patios, walkways and walls

The stone you walk on every day, laid on a base built to stay flat through a Kawartha winter.

  • ✓Natural stone, flagstone and interlock patios
  • ✓Walkways, front entrances and stone steps
  • ✓Armour stone and block retaining walls
  • ✓Pool surrounds
  • ✓Grading, drainage and sod to finish the yard

Outdoor living

The pieces that turn a yard into the place everyone ends up on a summer night.

  • ✓Fire pits and seating areas
  • ✓Pergolas and privacy screens
  • ✓Outdoor kitchens
  • ✓Decks and fences

We run our own excavators and skid steers, so the base under your patio is dug, graded and compacted by the same crew that lays the stone. The base is what decides whether a patio stays flat through freeze and thaw.

Walls that need them get structural drawings and a permit before we dig, and every build ends with a walk-through and a written warranty contract.

Building yards in Cobourg and Port Hope: what changes here

Permits and locates

Port Hope needs no permit to remove trees on private property, unless a development application is open on that property, when no tree comes down without a Certificate of Compliance from the Director of Planning and Development. In the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority's regulated areas, near the Lake Ontario shoreline, creeks and wetlands, site grading and fill take its permit. In urban Port Hope, landscaping, pool and driveway projects that need no building permit can still call Canadian Nuclear Laboratories directly for construction monitoring. The locate goes to Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call).

The ground you are on

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority maps Lake Ontario hazard lands as the farthest combined reach of three hazards: flooding, erosion and dynamic beaches. First mapped in 1990 and updated through the Lake Ontario Shoreline Management Plan, the shoreline runs in reaches from Port Hope to Cobourg Harbour and from Cobourg Beach east. A lakefront yard here gets laid out behind that line, on a base dug and drained by our own machines.

The rule that shapes the build

In Cobourg, a Heritage Permit comes before any exterior work on a designated heritage property, and work inside one of the Town's heritage conservation districts follows that district's plan. Some permits are approved by Heritage Planning staff, and others go to the Cobourg Heritage Advisory Committee and Council. We check the heritage register for your address before designing front-yard stone work, and the permit itself costs nothing.

Landscaping in Cobourg and Port Hope: your questions answered

Do I need a permit to take out trees in Port Hope?

Not usually. Port Hope does not require a permit to maintain or remove trees on private property. The exception is a property with an open development application, where a Certificate of Compliance comes first.

Is my Cobourg house a designated heritage property?

The municipal heritage register answers that, and Heritage Planning staff confirm it before work starts. Repainting in existing colours and re-pointing brick usually need no Heritage Permit, while alterations do. We look it up at the first visit.

Can you build near the Lake Ontario shore?

Yes, behind the conservation authority's hazard line and with its permit where the yard sits in the regulated area. We pull the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority mapping for your lot before drawing anything.

What do you build?

Patios and walkways in natural stone, flagstone and interlock, armour stone and block retaining walls, stone steps, pool surrounds, fire pits, pergolas and privacy screens, outdoor kitchens, decks and fences, plus the grading and sod that finish it.

How does pricing work?

The first visit gives you rough numbers. After the design meeting you get a detailed quote, a 10% deposit locks the scope and materials, and the final quote is the exact price for the job.

What size of project do you take on?

Most builds start around $20,000, from a patio and wall up to a full backyard at $150,000 and more.

When can you start?

One crew builds a limited number of yards each season. Designs signed over the winter are scheduled first for spring.

Do I need a permit?

Most patios and garden walls do not. A retaining wall over 1 metre of exposed height next to public property, access to a building, or private property the public is admitted to is a designated structure under the Ontario Building Code: it is designed to the Code's structural rules and takes a building permit, and we arrange the engineering. Anything close to the water needs the conservation authority's permit first. We check at the first visit.

Who is on site?

One or both of the owners, every day of the build, managing the job and keeping you and your neighbours in the loop.

Other areas and services

Every page has the local permit office, the ground and the rules for that area.
