Excavation in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge

Excavation in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge is rock work on roads owned by three different governments: the towns, the District of Muskoka and the province. The usual jobs are a driveway cut through granite to a cottage lot, a foundation on a ridge above the lake, and service trenches across shallow soil. Thor brings its own excavators up from Bobcaygeon, files the entrance permits and locates, and has an owner on every job.

Site prep, foundations and services

Building a house, cottage, shop or addition? You get the lot cleared, the foundation dug to the engineer's drawings, the site services trenched in, and the grade set so water goes where it belongs.

  • ✓Lot clearing, stump and brush removal
  • ✓Foundation and basement excavation to the drawings
  • ✓Site services: water, hydro, gas and drainage trenches, backfilled and compacted
  • ✓Rough grading, imported granular and fill where the ground needs it
  • ✓Final grading and site restoration

Driveways, drainage and land work

New driveway or entrance, a wet yard, a slope that needs terracing, a burst water line to the well? You get the machine, the operator and the paperwork in one call.

  • ✓New driveways, entrances and culverts, entrance permit filed for you
  • ✓Trenching for water lines, well lines and yard hydrants
  • ✓Drainage: swales, French drains and regrading that stop the pooling
  • ✓Retaining wall and shoreline excavation, permits coordinated
  • ✓Demolition excavation and haul-away for full-structure tear-downs

We run our own excavators and skid steers, and we dig with the utilities located first, every time. Soil that leaves the site goes to a proper reuse or disposal site under Ontario's excess-soil rules.

We do not do hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving or concrete forming. If your job is one of those we will point you to someone who does it. If it needs a machine, an operator who owns it, and the permits handled, we are the right call.

Digging in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge: what changes here

Permits and locates

In Bracebridge, a driveway entrance permit covers temporary access, a first entrance to vacant land, a new building on vacant land or a change to an existing entrance; an inspector reviews it, approval takes at least 10 business days, and a final inspection follows. Work in a Town right-of-way takes a road occupancy permit. District of Muskoka roads take a District entrance permit through its Permit Central portal, and Highway 11 an MTO permit. Gravenhurst's Site Alteration By-law 2014-027 asks for its permit before works start. Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) takes the locate request before any bucket moves.

The ground you are on

The District of Muskoka describes the Canadian Shield's shallow soils as having limited capacity to store water, and about 94 per cent of Muskoka is still under natural cover. On a typical lot, the machine meets granite within a short dig, so foundations, trenches and driveway cuts often mean breaking rock. Rain runs off fast over thin soil, so ditching and culverts get planned with the driveway. We look at the outcrops at the site visit and put the rock work in the written price.

The rule that shapes the job

Bracebridge's Tree Cutting By-law 2025-103 regulates trees within 60 metres of navigable water, 70 metres of Highway 11, and in the Urban Centre and Muskoka Falls. Trees in those areas can come down for construction under an issued building permit without notice, but removing a regulated tree within 5 metres of an occupied building or 6 metres of a septic system needs notice to the Town. We clear only what the permit covers.

Excavation in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge: your questions answered

Who issues a driveway entrance permit around Bracebridge?

It depends on the road. The Town of Bracebridge for Town roads, the District of Muskoka through Permit Central for District roads, and the Ministry of Transportation for Highway 11. The District's acknowledgement email is not an approval, so we wait for the permit before digging.

Will the job need rock breaking?

Often. Shield granite sits close to the surface across Gravenhurst and Bracebridge. We check at the site visit and price the rock work up front, so the rock is priced before the dig starts.

Do I need a site alteration permit in Gravenhurst?

For work the Site Alteration By-law covers, yes, and the Town asks for the application before any work starts. Work started before the permit costs more to sort out, so we file first.

What excavation work do you do?

Site preparation and foundation digs, lot clearing and grading, trenching and backfill for services and water lines, driveways and entrances, drainage, and the excavation side of demolition and septic jobs.

What do you not do?

Hydrovac, well drilling, fence post holes, paving and concrete forming. We will tell you straight and point you to someone who does.

Do you handle the utility locates?

Yes. Ontario law requires a locate request before any digging. We file it with Ontario Dig Authority (formerly Ontario One Call) at least five business days ahead, and we do not dig until the marks are down.

How do you price excavation?

One written price after the site visit for a defined job. If the job is open-ended, we agree the rate and the estimate up front and you see the hours.

How soon can you start?

Small jobs often inside two weeks in season. Anything with permits waits on the permit, which we manage and keep you posted on.

What happens to the soil you dig out?

Reused on site where the grade needs it, otherwise hauled to a proper reuse or disposal site. Ontario's excess-soil regulation applies once soil leaves a property, and we handle that paperwork.
